Welcome to the Health and Social Care Department
Our Intent
The health and social care, and more recently childcare, departments offer a broad, inclusive and balanced curriculum. Delivered in KS4 and KS5, there are a range of choices offering both level 2 and 3 qualifications including the technical diploma in children’s play, learning and development which incorporates a strong vocational element requiring students to attend a work placement for a whole day each week. The progression to further education or the world of work is clear to all students and the focus within the department has always been one of support and encouragement with strong links with the careers department in the academy.
Complimenting other subjects within the school community, students will experience and study a vast range of Health and Social Care topic areas requiring them to demonstrate maturity and respect for others. Coupled with high expectations means students will aspire to excellence and will hopefully become confident and fully prepared to manage their emotions for the many challenges and opportunities they face in their future
Equality of Opportunity not only underpins much of the course content but is part of the ethos of the department as we do not discriminate in any way which gives rise to a wide range of abilities and results. The courses are reviewed each year, with a questionnaires issued upon completion of BTEC qualifications. These questionnaires are acted upon and changes made if required to meet the needs of the students.
Students learn how people grow and develop over the course of their lives from infancy to later adulthood, the factors that may affect this, such as predictable and unpredictable life events. Students will analyse this impact from a positive and negative viewpoint, demonstrating empathy and applying knowledge through the use of case studies. The curriculum allows students to secure skills for their own social development, through cultural capital content which demonstrates how people are individual and can adapt to changes using local and national health and social care support.

Extra Curricular Activities and Clubs
We encourage all students to participate in the extra-curricular programme we offer. Our clubs and activities are designed to be inclusive for all; the broad range on offer ensures that there is something for students of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to get involved with. We regularly review our offer to meet the ever-changing needs of our students.

BTEC LEVEL 2 CHILDRENS PLAY, LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT (EARLY YEARS PRACTITIONER)
This course is ideal for those students wishing to pursue a career in childcare. It can be taken alongside resit English / maths or alongside 1 or 2 A-Levels. It is designed for students who are not planning to go to university
BTEC LEVEL 3 NATIONAL EXTENDED CERTIFICATE IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE
This course is ideal for those students wishing to pursue a career in Nursing, Midwifery, primary school teaching, social work or any other allied professions
BTEC LEVEL 3 NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE
The course builds on the ‘extended certificate’ and is highly valued by further education providers for students applying for nursing, midwifery, primary school teaching, social work or any other allied professions e.g. paramedic science, speech and language therapy etc.
